7digital What we said: If, back in the 80s, we’d have been asked to select one new wave act to survive the next three decades, Duran Duran probably wouldn’t have been top of our list. Yes, there’s no denying that Le Bon and co had the tunes, but the band were so much a part of the Zeitgeist that their whole oeuvre seemed in danger of dating terribly. Conversely, the release of this 14th studio album highlights that quite the contrary is true. Co-produced with Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers, Paper Gods is proof that Duran Duran’s shiny brand of synth-driven pop-rock is still very much in vogue, not least when they’re touching on funk with Janelle Monae during ‘Pressure Off’, or teaming up with Kiesza for the EDM-inflected ‘Last Night In The City’.
