7digital What we said: From Childish Prodigy to wayward angel, Philly-based singer-songwriter Kurt Vile seems fond of casting himself in the role of damaged genius. And with his fourth solo album offering up a plethora of lo-fi, flickering Americana, coloured by his almost Dylan-esque, dissonant drawl, he’s got a point. Whether its the shimmering country-rock whirl of ‘Society Is My Friend’ or the pared-back picking of ‘Peeping Tomboy’, you can almost see him slumped in the corner of seedy pool hall, guitar in hand, cigarette in mouth, sneering his dissatisfaction through the smoky fug. Though if the tarnished, bluesy beauty of Smoke Ring For My Halo brings him the success it ought, he may not be the perennial outsider he purports to be for much longer.
