7digital What we said: Where 2014’s excellent Ultraviolence saw Lana Del Rey dealing in sultry desert rock and dream-pop with Black Keys-frontman Dan Auerbach, this follow-up was created with long-time collaborators Rick Nowels and Kieron Menzies, and “inspired by late-night Miles Davis drives” and “muddy trap energy”. You can hear the hallmarks of the latter in ‘High By The Beach’ – which is underpinned by fantastically elastic sub-bass –and of the former in the languid trumpet notes threaded through ‘Terence Loves You’. Elsewhere, the title track features similarly atmospheric, Bond theme-style string arrangements as ‘Shades Of Cool’, but boasts about double the amount of noir-ish intrigue. Throughout, Del Rey favours subtle sonic evolutions over any sort of radical change, and it’s a decision that pays off: her brooding paeans to unsuitable beaus remain as affecting as ever.
