7digital What we said: In some respects, Evan Mast and Mike Stroud are victims of their own creative vision. Having pioneered such a distinct sound with 2006’s aptly-titled Classics, each subsequent Ratatat record has operated within those very-specific sonic parameters, with just the subtlest of modifications. The upshot is that you could probably predict how their first album in five years sounds, without hearing a single note. The smooth, FX pedal-heavy guitars, the pitch-shifted synths, the baroque flourishes: they’re all present and correct on Magnifique. There’s been no discernible dip in the quality of the Brooklyn duo’s songwriting, either – it’s as playful as it ever was. Really, whether you enjoy this fifth installment or not comes down to how non-negotiable a priority tangible artistic progression is for you.
